The debate on whether liquefied natural gas (LNG) is a clean<\/strong> and sustainable<\/strong> source of energy is complex. In this Molg\u00e1s article, we analyse its advantages and disadvantages, identify environmental challenges and address other frequent concerns, such as \u2018is LPG dangerous?\u2019, \u2018LNG and the enviroment\u2019, \u2018is LNG clean?\u2019<\/strong> and \u2018LNG and sustainability\u2019<\/strong>. We will explore the current scientific evidence and provide you with a comprehensive, informative and non-commercial overview. <\/p>\n\n

What is LNG? (Basic context) <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

LNG is natural gas converted into a liquid at about -160 \u00b0C, which reduces its volume by about 600 times. This transformation facilitates transport by ship, train or lorry to non-pipeline locations. It is then regasified for use in power generators, heaters, ships, vehicles and industrial processes. <\/p>\n\n

Benefits of LNG in terms of \u2018clean\u2019 energy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

Reduces CO\u2082 emissions compared to other fossil fuels<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n
    \n
  • Compared to coal, it emits up to 50% less CO\u2082; compared to oil, up to 30 % less.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Its combustion generates less nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulphur (SOx) and particulate matter, improving air quality.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n

    Bridge fuel in the energy transition<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n

    It is considered a \u2018bridge fuel\u2019 \u2013 flexible and compatible with renewable energies, it provides stability when these are not constant. Combined cycle plants, for example, can be adjusted quickly. <\/p>\n\n

    Maritime and industrial transport<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n
      \n
    • On ships, it substantially reduces polluting emissions compared to diesel or heavy fuel oil.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • In industry and power generation, it is efficient and cleaner than other fossil fuels.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n

      Disadvantages: risks in the LNG chain<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

      Methane leaks \u2013 a serious problem<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n
        \n
      • Burning LNG may be clean, but methane leaks are a major concern: trapped in the atmosphere, methane is ~23 times more potent than CO\u2082.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • A report points out that up to 8.8% of total emissions from the LNG cycle come from leakage.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n

        Role in areas with energy deficits<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n

        In regions with a lack of grid power or coal dependency, LNG has \u2018improved energy security\u2019 and reduced pollutants. However, its use must be backed by investment in renewable energy and efficiency panels. <\/p>\n\n

        Comparison with LPG \u2013 is LPG dangerous?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

        Although this is not the central question, it is worth comparing them:<\/p>\n\n

          \n
        • LPG (propane\/butane)<\/strong>: produces 20% less CO\u2082 than petrol, 10% less than diesel and also reduces NOx and particulates.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • However, LPG does not contain methane and its infrastructure (cylinders, vehicles) poses a risk of leaks or explosions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • In terms of impact, LNG can offer a greater reduction in pollutants if methane is well controlled, but it requires more investment and infrastructure.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n
